hey nyquil driver
it's 11:30, and everyone in my house (except for the cats) is asleep. travis sacked out on the couch almost immediately after finishing dinner at 8ish (or maybe he didn't even eat dinner; just had some chips and salsa), then got up around 9ish and went to bed. his alarm was going off about every 11 minutes, but i think he just gave up on the snooze a short time ago. drew got home about an hour ago with girlfriend #1 (of about 3 +/- 1) and went straight to bed. as for me, i zonked out on the couch for a bit, finished reading snow crash (an excellent book), and intended to go to bed about 45 minutes ago, but was drawn into the evil world of aol instant messenger (or ichat, as i prefer to use it). but now i've taken a single nyquil capsule in the hopes that it will stave off the space opera being performed in my sinuses long enough to put me to sleep, and not fuck me up too much in the morning, as i have a job fair to attend.

under pressure
i feel like i have this massively important something to write, but it's so important that i have to find just the right time to write it, so i won't be influenced by any particular emotion or upcoming homework or draft blowing through the house. i also feel that it's so important that, just like waiting to open presents on christmas morning, waiting to write it is better than actually writing it. which is really just an excuse to not write it.

howard dean on privacy
a national id card? with biometrics?
"in many ways, privacy is the new urban myth....
the information for sale regarding your private life is detailed -- and lucrative. when it comes to the internet, every web page you have ever visited, every email you have ever sent, every word you have ever typed, is stored somewhere and can be accessed by someone with the right skills."
okay, howie: first of all, ever heard of ssl and https? how about redirectors and anonymizers? or ssh? or encrypted imap? how about gpg and pgp? and second, just because it's easy to gather all this information on people, that justifies making it easier?

since it's snowing like crazy here (well, not really all that crazy, but maybe just a little silly) (and since i'm a lazy bastard), i'm watching for your eyes only. one of the characters is played by topol, who starred as tevye in fiddler on the roof 10 years before this movie was made. although the character he's playing is supposed to be greek, he can't get five words out with me expecting him to break into "l'chayim"...

foreigner
i keep starting to organize thoughts to write up something on my perception of love and how it's changed over time, but every time i do, i get foreigner's "i want to know what love is" stuck in my head, which then makes writing damn near impossible.

so, i'm watching my newly-installed hdtv cable instead of thinking. ooo...pretty pictures...

... and i now have an "atom" site feed, in addition to the rss feed, whatever that means. it's linked in the sidebar off to the left there (at the bottom), if that means anything to you.

dollars to mars
i keep hearing about how the u.s. can't afford to send people to the moon or mars. this is a huge pet peeve of mine, so here i go. for everyone who thinks we can't afford going to mars (you can do your own interpolation for the moon) (these numbers were figured out by brian enke at southwest research institute):

the mars direct plan touted by zubrin and the mars society will cost $7-30 billion, depending on who you're asking. it will take 5-7 years to develop, and deliver 53.8 metric tons to the surface of mars (which is a very minimal amount, but it can be shown that it's enough). that works out to about $1B-$6B/year.

the current (up until today) plan for going to mars, known as the nasa mars design reference mission, will cost $40-60 billion, and take 7-10 years to develop. it would deliver 153 metric tons to the surface of mars (which is plenty). that works out to about $4B-$8B/year.

for reference, the so-called 90-day report commissioned by bush sr. when he said we should go to mars cost $450 billion and would have taken 30 years to develop, but it was grossly over-designed. that's $15B/year.

which just happens to be nasa's current (not including bush's request for an extra billion) budget for fiscal year 2004. half of that $15B is for the manned spaceflight program, of which $2.1B goes to the space station development & operations, $4B to the shuttle, and $1.7B for the space launch initiative, aka the orbital space plane, aka the crew exploration vehicle.

so that's $8B/year that this country spends on manned spaceflight (not including anything the air force might be doing). the entire federal budget for 2004 was $2200B. nasa currently gets 0.68% of the entire federal budget.

some numbers to compare to, from various government web sites and so forth:
-social security gets $493B/yr from the federal budget
-medicare/medicaid gets $440B/yr from the federal budget
-the defense department gets $390B/yr from the federal budget
-$307B/yr from the federal budget goes toward paying off the deficit
-the iraq war cost taxpayers $79B in 2003, and is estimated to cost $87B in 2004
-$40B/yr from the federal budget goes to unemployment
-the airline bailout in 2002 cost taxpayers $20B

that's all well and good, and we can say "poor nasa" until we're blue in the face, but a dollar not used by nasa is a dollar that can be used for something else, right?

well, no. the us government works on something called deficit/surplus spending. that means that a "dime saved" from nasa is a dime of deficit reduction, not a dime to be spent elsewhere. if the us wants to spend more money on project x, it will run up the deficit.

okay, but doesn't that mean that money that nasa uses could be used instead to pay off the deficit? this is true, but it would be a small drop in a large bucket -- dropping nasa entirely would, in principle, increase the deficit payoff by just under 5%. but think about this: nasa's entire budget is a third of the us trade deficit for the month of march in 2003.

some more federal numbers to ponder:
-the gross domestic product estimated revenue for 2003 was $10,500B
-the federal budget for 2003 was $2,128B (20% of GDP)
-the budget for nasa for 2003 was $15B (0.14% of GDP)
-that trade deficit for just the month of march in 2003 was $42.9B (0.4% of GDP)

and, for reference, some monetary amounts from other parts of our lives (in current-year dollars):
-microsoft's revenue for 2004 is estimated to be $32B. their income for 2004 will be $13B. microsoft's assets in 2002 amounted to $67.6B.
-general motors corporation's revenue for 2002 was $177.3B. income in 2002 was $3.9B. gm's 2003 reserve was $20B.
-the average assets of ten randomly-selected investment management firms amount to $390.7B.
-the yearly remittances from filipino migrant workers to family in the philippines is $7B.
-the us and europe spend $31B/year combined on ice cream
-people in the us spent $114B on alcoholic beverages in 2002
-artwork sold worldwide is valued at $100B/year
-the estimated cost of spam to us businesses (assuming 7 min/day of time lost) is $87B/year
-again, a manned mission to mars would cost the us $1-8B/year.

and finally, what about apollo? the budget for the apollo missions maxed to $3B/yr (current-year dollars) in 1966, which was 0.4% of the GDP. that dropped to 0.2% of the GDP in 1970. today, 0.4% of the GDP would be $42B.

so, for all those who say we can't afford to send people to mars, i say, do the math. and if you don't think nasa can handle it, send the money you'd spend on that piece of modern art or that ice cream cone to, say, burt rutan at scaled composites, or bob zubrin at the mars society.

again, thanks to brian enke of the southwest research institute and the rocky mountain mars society for all these numbers.

suicides of u.s. troops rising in iraq
14% of non-hostile troop deaths in iraq are suicides. the article doesn't really discuss that number in a historical context, but wow. "fighting this kind of war is clearly going to be stressful for some people," says asst. defense secretary for health affairs dr. william winkenwerder. "this kind of war" -- does that mean just fighting guerillas in cities, or fighting an unjustified war in a country that's becoming increasingly more hostile to the "liberation" soldiers presence?
i highly recommend the movie the battle of algiers as a startling insight into the type of conflicts going on in iraq right now.

straight to the moon! ... er, sorta
now, i'm all about sending people to mars. and the moon, too (although i really don't see the point). but:

  • "NASA's space shuttle fleet would be retired as soon as construction of the International Space Station is completed" -- okay, that's a good idea.
  • "the current timetable leaves a period several years when NASA would lack manned space capability -- hence the need to use Soyuz vehicles for flights to the station" -- um...why? why not complete the orbital space plane, especially if the plan is to use a modified osp to go to the moon?
  • "During the remainder of its participation in space station activities, NASA's research would be redirected to sustaining humans in space. Other research programs not involving humans would be terminated or curtailed" -- again, why? this article makes it sound like all robotic solar system exploration would be dropped, including exciting missions like messenger and new horizons, and important stuff like the sun-earth connection and the hundreds of other things nasa does.
  • "The first manned Mars expeditions would attempt to orbit the red planet in advance of landings -- much as Apollo 8 and 10 orbited the moon but did not land. The orbital flights would conduct photo reconnaissance of the Martian surface before sending landing craft, said sources familiar with the plan's details." -- except that apollo 8 and apollo 10 were three day flights, and an orbital mission to mars would take eighteen months each way! just to take some pictures? you don't need to send people all the way to mars just to take some pictures. we have plenty of robots in orbit around mars just for that purpose.
  • "the administration will convene an unusual presidential commission to review NASA's plans as they unfold" -- again, why? this shows a complete lack of faith in nasa, and stinks of micro-managing.
  • "Sources said Bush will direct NASA to scale back or scrap all existing programs that do not support the new effort." -- now this, i'm waiting to hear the details about. as it's written here, it makes it sound like my lab, along with a good chunk of nasa, will be shut down.

oh, and livejournal sucks, because you can't just anonymously post comments, as you can on blogger blogs like mine. so all of my random anonymous comments have to be screened first -- which i guess is kinda alright because that means molly actually gets to read them, but is still annoying.

bush to announce new missions to moon, mars
i was skeptical about the last announcement, and my job-hunting self remains skeptical about this one, but "An interagency task force led by Vice President Dick Cheney has been considering options for a space mission since summer," and:
"Three senior officials said Bush wants to aggressively reinvigorate the space program, which has been demoralized by a series of setbacks, including the space shuttle disaster last February that killed seven astronauts.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Bush's announcement would come in the middle of next week."

also, since this was a fox news item, the ads on the page link to "collectable talking action figures of george w bush, george h w bush (sr)," "president george w bush in flight suit 12 inch action figure," and "george bush talking doll - action figure speaks 17 memorable phrases with the president's voice!"
